Kudos to ChessOK and a game by Morphy

I hope everyone is having a great weekend! It is gorgeous here in Nashville. (which means I need to get outside...)

Last week I ordered Aquarium Standard for download from ChessOk. I was intrigued by some of the analysis features and publishing prospects. I was not impressed. I really did not find the GUI to be very inviting. I generally don't like bells and whistles. This is all a matter of taste of course and is not the point of this post. The point is that ChessOK (convekta), is a good company that stands behind their products. I emailed them to voice my displeasure and they offered to either send a more expensive piece of software(probably Rybka 3) or give me my money back! A refund? That is unheard of in this day and age, especially when the product was a download and was already on my computer.

I took the refund and uninstalled and deleted every aspect of the program from my laptop. They were honorable and therefore so was I! Even though I did not like this program I will not hesitate to purchase from them again(there is a collection of Botvinnik games I am interested in). ChessOK is OK in my book!

Below is a game that I have annotated from the great Paul Morphy. As always, I have done my best with the analysis and learned quite a bit from the process. I am sure there are some errors but we learn from trial and error!

Have a great weekend!

  2. Thanks Wahrheit! I have a lot of doing that kind of analysis. I feel like I am getting better at it. My coach has been on me about being more and more detailed. When I dig into a game like that whether it be my own or a master game I always feel like I have gained some new insight or detail about chess that either makes me better at it or at the very least increases my appreciation and love for the game.

  4. Hey Wang!

I do enjoy game analysis a lot. I have been trying spend time doing that as well as hit the tactics, endgames and then just playing through annotated games. Silman's endgame book has taught me a lot about how to approach studying all aspects of the game, including openings and even strategic concepts. (of course this all needs to be backed up by my play so it is still up for debate).

I have Deep Rybka 3 (with the chessbase interface) and am very pleased by it.
