Some fun but most likely meaningless statistics from my chess games!

SO just for the heck of it I went database diving in the great FREE software, Scid vs. PC.

Ever since I began playing at least one G/60-G/65 a week I have been keeping  a fairly tidy database of my games.  (this dates back to September 20th or so when I rejoined the ICC)

Since September 20th, 2011 I have played 66 games of chess.  All but 21 of them were of the G/60 or G/65 variety.  20 were a smattering of G/20 or G/30 at Chess.com and then there was one correspondence game at Chess.com.

Because I got nothing else to do here are my current chess statistics:

After a few games my rating at ICC was 1198.  That was in early October.  About four months later my current rating at ICC is 1502

My Stats with the White pieces:

33 Games:  17 wins and 16 losses.

23 games were G/60 or G/65.  10 were at G/20 or G/30

My opponent's average rating has been 1393 when I play with the White pieces.

My best win as White:  Black was rated 1453
My worst loss as White:  Black was rated 1198

(and I SUCK against the Sicilian with the White pieces--not ONE win
playing against a Sicilian opening as White!)

Opening statistics for the White pieces are hard to decipher as I have been playing a lot of different openings as White lately.  I DO KNOW I SUCK against the Sicilian!  :)

My Stats with the Black Pieces:

33 Games:  17 wins, 13 losses, 3 draws

23 games were G/60 or G/65.  9 were at G/20 or G/30
and 1 was a correspondence game at Chess.com (which I won)

My opponent's average rating has been  1374 when I have the Black pieces.

My Best Win as Black:  White was rated 1509
My Worst loss as Black:  White was rated 1287

Best opening as Black:  I am scoring at 75% against 1. e4 with the 2...e6 Sicilian.

Worst opening as Black: The ENGLISH!  I losing 75% of my games against the English.

So OF COURSE all of this does not mean much at all!!  But it is interesting that I seem to score a bit better with the Black pieces??  But with so few games it is still a statistical anomaly!

The OTB tournament is this weekend!  But for the first time ever going to an OTB tournament I feel that I can at least hang at the chessboard. (within a certain level player of course)  And that is a good feeling!!  I just need to think, play the position, and have fun!!

Anyway, I hope everyone has a great weekend.  I will post Saturday or Sunday with a tournament report.  (it is a one day 3 round, G90 swiss!)

  2. Have fun in the tournament!

OTB tournament mechanics can sometimes be a bit bewildering, but you'll get used to them quickly. Just a suggestion, but get there early so you can look at the house rules and maybe ask the TD any newbie questions you may have.

Re: the stats, I think you have a sufficiently large sample size to have it be meaningful, if not definitive. These sorts of stat runs can be very useful at picking out patterns in opening performance that you may not be fully aware of (as you've noted). If you're still deciding on your openings selection, it's a good tool to see where more attention is needed.

Also, for a long time I had a better score as Black, so that's not so unusual. It's more of a sign that your openings as White aren't giving you the results that you should be obtaining at your current playing strength.

  3. I've saved a bunch of games as well, but I've never done any trend analysis on it ... I might try what you did.

Best of luck with the tournament this weekend.

  4. Hey Laurent S:

Thanks! I will definitely posting results. I am excited it has been A WHILE since I have been able to play OTB.

    Hey ChessAdmin:

Thanks for the advice. And I definitely need to take a look at the Sicilian as White. I hope I see one or two tomorrow at the tourney just to play against them.

    Hey Rocky!

Thanks for stopping by. Scid VS PC is great and free for doing quick trend analysis out of our own database. (or any database for that matter.)

  5. Hey Tommy,

Have fun and good luck! How many rounds, and what are the time controls, and what rating-bracket is it in?

    Some quick pointers:

    1) Make sure you get enough sleep! Being well rested is much more important than that last hour of tactics-cramming.

    2) Similarly, make sure you have a good breakfast and some way to get lunch during the day. Drink lots of water, too. (rumbling stomachs and sugar-crashes are not good for chess skill *laugh*)

    3) Sit on your hands! Especially if this is your first tournament, remember that it's touch-move, remember to hit your clock, and remember to write down every move. These are the things that online play simply can't teach (and can give some bad habits, as well).

    4) Have fun, win, lose, or draw. :)

  6. Hey Jabari,

It is going to be a 3 round G/90.

I think they have an under 1400 bracket which I will enter since my OTB rating has yet to crack the vaunted 1000 mark! (not really close even)

I am looking forward to it as I love OTB but just don't get to do it much.

Off to sleep for me. :)
